Mzimkhulu Ogies Water Reservoir Refurbishment Project
Mzimkhulu Mine started the implementation of one of the Community Development projects under the current Social Labour Plan (SLP) commitments. The project started on the 13 June 2023 with about 6 local people being employed on site and the project is expected to be completed in four months’ time. Several local (Phola and Ogies) SMMEs will be benefit through this initiative by supplying several services such as fencing, security ablution facilities etc. during the duration of the project. The capital allocation for the project is R4M which will be focusing on the new bulk pipeline connection from the main water pipe and reviving and refurbishing the existing reservoir. This initiative will ensure uninterrupted water supply to Ogies community especially during power cuts.
RMC Handover of the road infrastructure project
One of RMC’s Community Development Projects of the Social Labour Plan (SLP) was the constriction of the Walkway and inner Road at Somaphepha, this project was completed and handed over to the municipality on the 14 April 2023. During the handover, which was attended by the Executive Mayor of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM), Hon Masilela Petros Mhlonishwa and his executive committee members, he acknowledged the impact of infrastructure development in the community and commended RMC’s social impact in Somaphepha. During his address he emphasized that “it is important for mining companies like RMC to give back to the community and ensure that as part of their SLP commitments they continue to development local communities and leave behind skills that will empower locals to continue to sustain themselves beyond mining activities”. About R2,6M was spent on the project with 46 people being employed and seven subcontractors during the construction phase.
RMC Donation of Laptops to best performing 2022 Grade 12 learners from disadvantaged schools
RMC donated 8 laptops to best performing learners from Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM), of these eight learners, three came from Bankfontein Combined School which learners which are beneficiaries of the extended tutor programme which is sponsored by RMC. The handover was conducted on 22 February 2023. During the handover ceremony, the principal encouraged other leaners to work hard in order to receive support from the mine going forward as there are other opportunities like bursaries which are available to best performing students.
RMC School Support Programme 2023
RMC continues to support learners from Bankfontein Combined School and Steve Tshwete Boarding School with extra lesson for Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy, Physical Science and Business Studies for Grade 11 and 12 learners. This education programme is aimed at getting learners ready for the final year Garde 12 exams and it provides conducive environment for learning as most of the learners comes from farming communities, this is done through continuous assessments throughout the year.
