Mwelase Opencast Mining Services (Pty) Ltd is an independent prominent contract mining company that was founded by Mwelase with the primary objective of delivering comprehensive and efficient mining services. Specializing in opencast mining operations, Mwelase Opencast Mining Services collaborates closely with various mining partners to extract valuable minerals and resources from the Earth’s surface.

Mzimkhulu Mining
The mine is a 100% owned and operating mine. The average monthly production from the mine is 410kt per month. Mzimkhulu is viewed in the group as a complex as we are in the process of adding approximately 14m tons of contiguous resources to the reserve.
The installed plant/processing capacity at the mine is a 700tph C&S plant plus a 100tph wash plant.
We are in the process of completing a project to add an additional 500tph coal washing facility that enables the complex to service a broader client base. This project is planned for completion in Q4 2024.
The mine supplies product to Eskom, domestic and export market.
MOMS (Mwelase Opencast Mining)
The group realized one of its strategic goals to establish and develop a coal mining. Capability in 2019.The business (as a wholly owned subsidiary) operates as an independent mining. Contractor and currently mines approximately 2,5m cubes of material per month. Which is expected to increase to 4m cubes per month within the next 7-9 months
Mwelase Processing
Mwelase processing was established (as a wholly owned subsidiary) with the strategic view of building up a company of substance that owns and operates coal processing facilities. The current operating capacity of the business is 750tph C&S facilities and 100tph washing capacity. The company has also developed and will operate a combined coal washing facility (275tph) for Rietvlei Colliery for the next 3 years. Mwelase processing is also constructing a 500tph coal washing facility for the Mzimkhulu complex.
Rietvlei Colliery
Rietvlei (RMC) is a co-owned resource with Butsanani and Emalangeni resources. Since the commencement of operations in 2018, the mine has developed to produce approximately 300Kt per month of ROM Rietvlei have installed processing capacity of a 700tph crashing and screening plant, 275tph coal processing facility Mwelase is the appointed managing partner in the business responsible for all the operations of the colliery supplies product to Eskom, domestic and export market.
